Hey everyone.

I joined earlier this year and posted a number of posts in the "Introduce yourself" thread.

My son is 16 and has had bouts of CVS for the last few years. The usual trigger for him was getting sick. Then he would get over the illness and have bouts of nausea and gagging for up to a week or so afterwards.

This last April he got sick and the nausea & gagging came on and just didn't go away. We ended up pulling him out of school and he tried doing some summer classes to catch up on a couple of classes.

We ran the gamut of medical options but he was right where he should be on all of them including blood tests, an ultrasound, full allergy panel, ENT exam and an endoscopy. Eventually, the ENT referred us to a neurologist in Eugene and we visited him.

While we were waiting for the neurologist (took a month or two to get in) we also started acupuncture which I believe helped some.

By the time we had gotten in to see the neurologist, the symptoms had finally waned away after like 5 months. The doctor prescribed a couple of migraine medicines in case his problems were the result of abdominal migraines.

A few weeks later he woke up in the morning and felt nauseous so we decided to try Rizatriptan and lo and behold, he noticed a difference in like 30 minutes. Within an hour, the symptoms were mostly gone.

Since then we have also tried the Ondansetron which also worked and removed the symptoms in less than an hour.

We went back to visit the neurologist and he was pleased we had found something that helped. We are going to continue monitoring the situation and go back to visit him early next year.

My son is now in online school through the Oregon Connections Academy and works all day in the office here with me as I work from home. This whole thing while causing a lot of anxiety and worry this year on top of what was an already tragic year for me has turned out to have some positive aspects in the long run.

Don't give up hope if you're looking for answers!  Prior to seeing the neurologist while we were seeing various doctors, we visited a naturopath and tried eliminating different foods. We tried just about every anti nausea medicine we could find through various doctors and none of them worked. Keep searching!  I hope the rest of you who are suffering have a positive turn of events like we have had!

Robin

Robin,

That is great! I'm so glad you guys are finding things that work for him. Had you guys not had or used and anti-nausea before? That is usually the first things that doctors throw at you. My son, only uses migraine meds and anti- nausea. He has preventatives and acute meds.

My son stopped traditional school his sophomore year. He graduated with High honors, a social science award for being top of the class and started College during his senior year.. From Connections. So if you need a success story, there it is. He has been able to keep going in college. He actually attends classes, although there are online classes available.

I look forward to hearing more good news from you and your son! Thank you for sharing.

No, we tried just about every anti-nausea medicine there is prior to going to the neurologist and none of them had any effect. I thought I had put that part in there but apparently I left it out.

Wow, that is nuts. We tried several. Nothing seemed to make a difference in the nausea or vomiting, so glad the Zofran is working for your son.
