This is an excellent overview of the process of applying for SSDI.  I know it's purpose was to show people with arthritis how to apply, but the process is the same.

I sailed through on my first try.  Of course, that was before I was diagnosed.  And I had already taken 2 short term leaves of absence with little or no result when it came to taking the vomiting away.  Still, it took about 15 months from the time I applied until I was granted benefits.   The good part here is that you do get back pay based on when you were no longer able to work.

I did not use an attorney.  There is usually a system set up in each state to assist you in getting your case heard.  In Kansas it goes under the name Kansas Legal Services.  There attorney fees are paid on a sliding scale based on the petitioner's income.  Many times they are free.  The best part about using state supported services is that they "aren't paid only if you win" like many private attorneys are.

Do you think children with cvs would qualify for some disability ? I had to quit my job because he was sick all the time & it will be very hard for me to go back to work based on him being sick so often. Just wondering.

April,
I would consult with someone from SSD, or an SSDI lawyer.  All you can do is inquire.  I know there are children out there, with other disabilities whose parents receive disability for them.

The best advice I can give on this is have a lawyer do it for you if you can't get results.  I used one that was always advertised on daytime TV as a kid.  They can only take out X amount of cash so you pay everyone the same.  They are also way better at proving history so you can end up with a retro check from the time you became completely unemployed.

I filed once on my own and was rejected, a few months after calling that lawyer I was waiting on a check.  It took a while, but I only had to fill out their paperwork once and send in my med info.  Could not have been happier.
