We have noticed at the start of an episode that our son can have food in his stomach from as much as 16 hours earlier. Our dr wants to do a stomach emptying test next week but I read that CVS patients can have normal or even increased empting when well and slower right before and during an episode. If so is it worth doing the test next week if he is feeling well?

I think it is important to run the tests.  If the testing is not done then the doctor won't have information for a best possible diagnosis.  Even with all the testing, on occasion another condition is later discovered.  Sometimes this is a blessing as the couple of cases we have had with waxing and waning appendicitis-- once removed, the patients were well.

You are correct that Dr.V reports increased gastric emptying while well and delayed or stopped gastric emptying as a cycle approaches. Many if not all of the CVS meds will have a constipating side effect.  Watch his bowels and remember that diarrhea does not always mean diarrhea -- sometimes the patient is actually constipated with dried stool remaining in place.  New stool runs liquid around the old dried stool.  Bathboy and others have posted on this topic.   It can be difficult to grasp vomiting and nausea and pain being delayed gastric emptying and diarrhea being part of a slow gut.

He takes fiber supplements and that has helped a lot with routine diarrhea. He seems to only get it now when it is with an episode. Other than that he is very regular.
Thanks for the advise.

I too recommend the testing. For us it gave us baseline during his healthy periods.
Make sure that you tell your doctor the pattern of occurring near an episode. That may be a way for you to head off an episode by pretreating for it. Depending on how soon before you notice the symptom.
